WinCleaner has great options for cleansing your hard drive and protecting your privacy, but it has the least amount of management and diagnostic features of any PC system utilities application we reviewed. It also has features that could easily be merged, like WinJunk Cleaner, WinNet Cleaner and WinPrivacy Cleaner. This PC system utilities application consists of a small set of features. Some of them might be able to solve minor issues that are affecting your system’s performance, but none of them is going to dramatically improve it.
WinCleaner OneClick combines the best features WinCleaner PC system utilities have to offer into one all-encompassing solution. Most of the items this feature addresses deal with removing things like internet clutter and broken shortcuts. Its only non-removal option is SmartStart Optimize, which disables applications and processes from opening when your operating system starts up, resulting in an increased startup speed.
WinUninstall Wizard displays a list of applications that are currently installed on your system. While other uninstaller features remove any traces of the applications you uninstall, this feature just removes applications using their respective embedded uninstallers.
WinSmart Mover is an unusual feature for a PC system utilities application. It moves selected files or folders and modifies any settings or shortcuts that go along with them. Sometimes when you move files or folders these changes are accomplished, but this doesn’t happen all the time. When it doesn’t, applications stop working properly because they’re setup to read files as if they were in their old location rather than where you put them. Using the WinSmart Mover feature eliminates this problem.
The Undo feature allows you undo any changes you’ve made to your system with WinCleaner. This feature is especially helpful because sometimes you can alter a setting or remove an item that’s essential to the operation of your system. When this happens, it’s good to know that you can hit the restore button and everything will be as it was.
WinJunk Cleaner removes unused and unnecessary files from your hard drive. To view which files this feature got rid of, click the Advanced Options button at the bottom of the screen. WinReg Cleaner scans through several types of registry keys looking for erroneous or invalid entries. While that number might seem similar to what’s covered in other registry cleaners, this registry cleaner doesn’t go very deep at all.
WinNet Cleaner clears any trace of your internet activity to help safeguard against identity theft. It empties your cache, history, cookies, URL drop list and AutoComplete data. This feature is decent enough to get the job done, but it really only covers the basics of internet privacy protection. WinPrivacy Lists Cleaner erases items from the recently used and run lists from various applications. Some of these entries were helpful, like clearing the find files and recently used documents lists, while others dealt with applications few people use, like Windows Wordpad and PKZip.
WinShortcuts Cleaner scans your hard drive, removable drives and network drives to find any shortcuts that are linked to applications that were recently moved or uninstalled. The problem with this feature is that it doesn’t try to fix the broken shortcuts it finds. Instead, it removes them all without trying to find a new, valid target for them. This creates the potential for shortcuts to be deleted when applications they're associated with have simply been moved to another location on your hard drive.
WinStartup Optimizer is one of WinCleaner's advanced features. It optimizes your startup configuration based on preset criteria attached to one of the following four profiles: Auto Optimize – Normal Mode, Auto Optimize – Aggressive Mode, Clean System Mode and Full Mode. The normal mode for Auto Optimize enables both required and optional applications to open when your operating system starts up while its aggressive mode only activates required applications. Clean System Mode disables all applications from loading at system startup, which isn’t recommended because your operating system often needs certain applications to open as it starts up to function properly. Full Mode enables all startup applications, which is also treacherous because this method could result in reduced system performance.
There are a few additional ways to optimize your PC using WinCleaner. This PC system utilities software also allows you to optimize your registry and the internet. Using WinNet Cleaner for example, you can clean all internet traces, cookies and history to prevent any serious problems on the internet. This feature also protects your privacy by erasing several passwords and personal information you may have entered on a webpage.
This PC system utilities application is easy-to-use because there’s not much to it. Each distinct feature in WinCleaner usually serves as a small subsection of a feature in similar applications. For instance, WinJunk Cleaner, WinNet Cleaner and WinPrivacy Cleaner are often combined into a single feature. Other features like WinShortcuts Cleaner and WinStartups Cleaner are solid features that are capable of standing on their own, but they’re not often the marquee features of a PC system utilities application.
WinCleaner is a stripped down PC system utilities application that has some interesting features, like WinSmart Move, and some features that just aren’t powerful enough to be the stars of the show, like WinShortcuts Cleaner. This PC system utilities application solved some very minor problems, but it lacked the optimization options that would truly improve our system’s performance. WinCleaner has decent options for removing clutter, but that’s about the extent of its functionality.
